Question about potentially fake BGS label
Hello,

I would like to as about BGS labels. Are they sometimes printing 9.0 instead of just "9" or this a fake label?

Please see attachment.

Best,

RE: Question about potentially fake BGS label
I think Subgrades have the decimal 9.0 but final grade should only be 9. I sourced this with a quick glance at some of my scans. If someone has scans that state otherwise PLEASE share them so our mods can help this user investigate.

So do you have cards with subs in the "9.0" format? I am not even able to find an example using Google Image search.

RE: Question about potentially fake BGS label
I did some spot checking on my graded cards and eBay - the subs don't use decimals on the subgrades if it's a 0 at the end. Can't say they didn't have a period of time where they did.

What's the serial number of the BGS holder?

RE: Question about potentially fake BGS label
According to the serial number it does match the card:

I'm by no means an expert in gaming cards so I can't imagine it's worth it to fake a BGS 9.....

*does research on eBay

Good gravy! Okay, so maybe it is! Okay, there's a bunch of ebay auctions (not mine) out there if I search "magic the gathering bgs chaos".

Here's a couple graded lower than a 9

In all the examples I found, none of them use decimals for whole grades on the subs. Examples run from serial numbers in the 3,000,000 up to the 11,000,000 though admittedly none are in the 6,000,000 range. It's possible for a short period of time in 2009 Beckett added decimals then removed them again.

The other thing I find off with the example you posted is the centering. Even though it's a camera picture and not a scan, the L/R looks noticeably off to me, especially looking at the top. Doesn't seem like it would earn a 9, especially compared to some of the other 9 centering in those auctions. The corners earning a 9 and the edges an 8.5 seem really generous too given all the white I can see, specifically on the bottom right corner.

In the end I can't say with certainty if this is tampered with or not, but if it were a card I was pursuing and it cost as much as these do, I would pass.

RE: Question about potentially fake BGS label
I looked at my own slabs from the time period. Has enough problems with the slab and label that it screams "fake". I don't do gaming but if I did I'd be wary of buying it and pass. I just don't like many things about it. Least of which is I have hundreds of slabs from right around those numbers and not one has 9.0 they all say 9 ( just go look in my "recent pickups thread" to see my slabs from a few months prior to that number) . Plus half a dozen other items in slab & card itself that don't pass my smell test.

Thanks for sharing the scan. There's no way a Black border Chao Orb has that much edge wear and still gets an 8.5 on edges from BGS.
