Confused about 1996, 1997, 1997-98 SPx sets... Help?!

Confused about 1996, 1997, 1997-98 SPx sets... Help?!
I've been going through my collection and I finally made it to my Jordan cards.  So I get to the SPx ones and...wth?

The card that I had categorized as 1996-97 SPx is (according to Beckett) supposed to be just 1996?

The card that I had categorized as 1997-98 SPx is (according to Beckett) supposed to be just 1997?

...but there is a 1997-98 SPx set also?  I just don't have any cards from it, apparently.

I'm quite confused and wondering if anyone here can shed some light on this issue.

Why are two of the SPx sets listed with only one year instead of two (like most Basketball issues) and why/how is there somehow a 1997 SPx AND a 1997-98 SPx set?

TIA!

Lol, can't argue with that.  Was hoping for something that'd provide a little more clarification, though.  Tongue

As far as I can tell the 1997 SPx and 1997-98 SPx must be different sets because the Jordan card (and others in each set) have different numbers.

96 SPx is the debut year for basketball, these are those egg shaped die-cuts and you will see the rookie class for 95 in that set, but none of the actual 96 rookie class.

97 SPx is the year that the cards were horizontal and they were shaped like the letters S, P and X, this is the first year we saw the SPx ProMotion set with the autographed versions with MJ, Penny, Kemp, McDyess and Stoudamire.

98 SPx is the year that the cards were more of a cylinder die cut shape and had the Grand Finale /50 parallels. I have pictures somewhere of an unopened box of this product and it clearly states 1998.

...then you have 98 / 99 SPx Finite...not sure where that falls.
