A lot of people don't give it up because they hope to recoup some of the money they put into it. It's not greed, especially when you consider what they paid for it when the player was "hot". That doesn't make the sellers all bad.
The reality, though, is those cards will never be worth what he paid for them in Maroney's rookie year. That's the nature of the hobby. A lot of sellers and traders don't get this.

Here's one more thing to think about...Beckett rarely updates pricing on rookies that never panned out. Take a look back over the years and you will see plenty of players that never amounted to anything in the NFL and are now out of the NFL yet their rookie cards still book for several times more than common rookies from the same sets. Many people look up book value to decide what to list their auctions for and they see that it is high and they don't want to undersell their cards.
Also keep in mind that rare cards can go up in value as time passes, even if they are of common players. Just take a look at the rare 90s inserts in basketball that are now selling for well over book value.
I do feel your frustration though as there are some rarer parallel rookie year cards for UF players that never made it more than a couple years in the NFL, and sellers want multiple times book value for. It is always frustrating to see, but I don't fret too much as I am not in a rush to get all the cards and usually in time I will get them for much less.
