Subgrades vs. No subgrades

Subgrades vs. No subgrades
Do people really care that much about subgrades? I mean the overall final grade 9.5 or 10 is what matters.

Planning on doing a sub soon and $15 per card compared to $30 with subgrades adds up quick. I can grade twice as many cards for same price.

I like the sub grades.  Then I have some kind of idea why the card got the grade it did.

I prefer subgrades, it was the main selling point for me over PSA back in 2000 when I started grading. Even if they aren't printing the subgrades, you know they still check all 4 areas for condition in order to arrive at the final grade.

RE: Subgrades vs. No subgrades
Depending on what I'm grading is the determining factor for me. My lower end PC stuff doesn't necessarily need subgrades but my National Treasures stuff definitely gets the sub-grade treatment.

I'm pretty much out of things to sell, anything I submit now is for protection, by and large.

RE: Subgrades vs. No subgrades
So, if I remember correctly, (and please correct me if I’m wrong) a card can’t grade higher than it’s lowest sub grade. So if a card gets a grade of 9.5 there are 4 possibilities:
1) are four all 9.5s
2) three 9.5s and a 10.0
3) Two 9.5s and two 10s
4) One 9.5 and three 10s

So if that is the case, and they all grade out at a 9.5, there is a clear cut distinction to the more OCD collector where he/she/them may see paying a premium for scenario number 4 as compared to #1.
I’m assuming a 10 gem mint card needs to have all 4 subs at a 10, so number 4 is very, very close to a gem mint 10 grade as compared to the others.

I guess if I saved used tinfoil and used tea bags instead of old comic books and old baseball cards, the difference between a crazed hoarder and a savvy collector is in that inherent value.

Good idea but this is not accurate to the point that if you have 3 "10" sub grades on a card with the last being a 9.5 it will get a gem mint 10 at least in the cases i have with BGS. A 9 can lower it back to a 9.5 as far as i have experienced it. I have only gotten 2 Pristine cards from BGS but one is a Trout Finest auto with all 3 sub grades of 10 and 1 with a 9.5 but the auto is a 10. The other was a gold refractor Correa that i sold.

Thanks for the clarification.
But my point is that basically, all 9.5 cards are not the same. Some may have certain aspects that are better than other 9.5 cards and a collector may like one’s composite subgrades better than another’s.

The card can't grade higher than it's 2nd lowest grade in most cases.  a BGS 9.5 could have subgrades of 3x 9.5 and 1x 9.0.  As someone who keeps a registry, it would drive me nuts to have half the registry with subgrades and half without.

RE: Subgrades vs. No subgrades
I personally like sub grades for 2 reasons.

1. I like to know where the "issue" with my card is if I didn't get a 10.

2. If I got a (3) 10s and (1) 9.5 as subs I would be tempted to crack it and resubmit for a black label.

RE: Subgrades vs. No subgrades
I really like subgrades, too.

The reason I prefer BGS so much is because of that.
