1933 Goudey Babe Ruth PSA 9 Tops $300,000
It was a big night for the Babe at the live portion of the Goldin Auctions Live & Premium Summer Auction. A 1933 Goudey Babe Ruth graded a Mint PSA 9 sold for $319,150.
Card #181 in the set, it’s one of four different Ruth cards in the iconic 1933 Goudey Baseball set.
This particular version six other PSA 9 copies. There’s also one that’s a Gem Mint 10. The only Ruth in 1933 Goudey to have more than one PSA 9 copy is #144, which has four at that level. It’s also a double-print.
According to the description, this is the first time a copy of the 1933 Goudey Babe Ruth #181 has been sold publicly in this condition in more than 15 years. Needless to say, the market has changed a lot since then.
In March, 2018, a PSA 8 copy went for $45,574 through SCP Auctions. In 2016, Robert Edwards Auctions sold one for $72,000.
The sale came during the live portion of Goldin Auctions’ 2018 Live & Premium Summer Auction. It took place at the Cleveland Airport Marriott, coinciding with the 2018 National Sports Collectors Convention. Catalog bidding continues through August 11.
