2016 Topps Chrome Baseball is getting a special edition factory set. Well, 2016 Topps Baseball is getting a Topps Chrome factory set. And each one comes with a pair of Superfractors.

Dubbed the Sapphire Edition, the online-exclusive release actually mirrors the full flagship 2016 Topps Series 1 and Series 2 sets, not the smaller 2016 Topps Chrome Baseball. That means 700 cards, not just 200. According to Topps, cards are done with in Blue Sapphire to differentiate them from regular Topps Chrome cards, at least those that overlap with the regular Chrome release.

In addition to the pair of Superfractors, each 2016 Topps Chrome Baseball factory set has at least 13 other Sapphire 75th Anniversary parallels numbered to 5.

Just 250 sets are being released.

That works out to 500 total Superfractors in the factory sets. Topps clarified that the 200 players in the main pack-based 2016 Topps Chrome Baseball set will not have Superfractors here. So that means the vast majority of the Superfractors will be lesser stars and commons. Bigger names will be found in subsets.

Although only 500 of the 700 cards have Superfractors in the boxed set, all 700 are available as Sapphire parallels.

The 2016 Topps Chrome Baseball factory sets go on sale on the Topps website on Wednesday, August 24. The cost? $1,500.

Seems kind of pointless if all the good players and rookie superfractors are not available.

This is a Foolish idea. It takes Value away from the Regular (200) card release and is, in my opinion OVERKILL. Too Many Cards being Released kind of resembles a Remake of the 90’s in my opinion. PANINI & TOPPS are making too many different card sets per year. They’re getting greedy and i hope it doesn’t kill the industry like it did in the 90’s

I think what is going to happen is that someone is going to do team breaks on these things.

I think at $1500 the sales of these are going to be less than stellar, but there are still some potential winners out there given the parallels #’d to 5.

I’m betting discounts will happen given they’ve had to do it with other things like the large 1/1 chrome auto cards to get them to move.

At $250 it would have been OK.

I agree with Richard, however a couple of supers of skunky Phillies for the PC would be alright. With only 250 boxes being available, this is probably too expensive for me to justify purchasing one….my kids gotta eat!

Topps has them on their website early, can’t order, but they have them listed at $1500 a set. Greed be running rampant at Topps in 2016, smh.

It’s $1500! I was thinking about this if it were a reasonable price, but that’s just insane! Plus, I now have two more cards of my Player Super-Collection that I’ll probably never get because people who break this set will make the cards stupidly expensive, I bet.

  7. Richard 24 August, 2016 at 11:26

Well, they’ve provided a nice list of potential superfractors and there are some good name left, but not enough to make it sensible given superfractors sometimes sell for under $100, including the autograph ones. smh.

I’d suggest team collectors keep an eye peeled as the market may see a temporary flood that will quickly dry up the same way last years tiffany team sets did.

A “fair” price for these sets is likely higher than my original estimate, though part of this will depend on individual cards being listed in the guide, and I don’t think the Tiffany sets were? Been a while since I had a guide, do they list as a multiple or …?

Topps puts “Special Edition” in the name of an existing set, and it magically appears. I can’t believe they can actually sell this stuff to people. They release so many cards now they’re essentially worthless to people like me. What’s special about a Topps card? Only what Topps tells you.

  9. Richard 25 August, 2016 at 12:25

And unsurprisingly they are still available.
At the right price these are not too awful, but
even at 50% off it would still be too expensive
    for most people.
I think at $500 I might pull the trigger, but I’m not always the brightest guy here so to speak.
You really are putting all your hopes on hitting one
of the few good superfractors or parallels.

  10. Brad 25 August, 2016 at 12:52

I just went on the topps website and you they have only sold 46 of these. You can add 204 to your cart but not 205.

  11. Richard 26 August, 2016 at 23:42

    lol.
    Well done Brad.
I’m seeing a bunch on Ebay. Some people are trying to ask well above cost and its still readily available, and will likely be dropping.

A few cards are doing well, but far too few for my taste.

  12. Kerry 29 August, 2016 at 09:28

Given the price of $1,500, not many should do this, but what I find interesting is that many will pull the trigger on Strata or Mint or Immaculate to get 2-5 cards at a cost of $50 per card but pass on a complete set at a price of less than $5 per card. Must be the overrated autos!

  13. colin 1 September, 2016 at 16:36

this is the biggest gimmick ive ever seen….I love the idea of a full 792 card chrome set but not at $1500 because you put a few ugly parallels in it those atomic refractors or crystal are gross you can keep your topps ill stick to the chrome refractor 200 card set by the way nice 2015 topps chrome mookie betts auto rc oh wait you didn’t do one
