2016 Upper Deck Captain America Civil War Hobby Box

By Ryan Cracknell | Hobby Editor

It’s Avenger versus Avenger, good guys and gals taking on other good guys and gals. And the implications, at least to the fictional world, run much deeper than an playground battle. But let’s be honest. As much potential as the movie has, how does it come together on trading cards? 2016 Upper Deck Captain America: Civil War has many of the same elements as other sets in the long-running line of releases based on the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Hobby boxes, which come in on the small side with just ten packs, have a pair of memorabilia cards to go along with an autograph, sketch card or other premium-style insert.

Base Set

Falling in line with the smallish box size, the 2016 Upper Deck Captain America: Civil War base set is on the petite side. It has 60 cards with images from the film.

Every hobby pack has one parallel. Blue Foil make up the vast majority of these. Others include Red Foil (/100), Green Foil (/10) and one-of-one PETG Acetate.

Memorabilia Cards

The majority of the hits come in the form of memorabilia cards. There’s a pair in each hobby box. Like a lot of Upper Deck’s other Marvel sets, they’re not limited to single swatches. Dual, Triple and Quad relics are also in the product.

Autographs, Sketch Cards and Premium Inserts

The third hit in each 2016 Upper Deck Captain America: Civil War hobby box fall under a few different categories.

Sign of the Times Actor Autographs are historically the most valuable cards in Upper Deck’s Marvel movie releases. Don’t look for that to change here. Chris Evans leads a short but strong autograph checklist.

Besides basic Actor Autographs, there are two sets of Team Captain America dual autographs.

Captain America Memorable Moments Artist Autographs have signatures from creators who have worked with the character in comics.

Sketch cards come with two themes as well: Team Captain America and Team Iron Man.

As far as premium inserts go that aren’t signed or sketch cards, there aren’t many. There’s Captain America 75th Memorable Moments (1:30 packs) and the one-of-one PETG base parallels.

Basic Inserts

A handful of basic inserts further expand the 2016 Upper Deck Captain America: Civil War checklist. Team Captain America Bios (1:6 packs) and Team Iron Man Bios (1:5) delve into the characters. Behind the Scenes (1:3) and Concept Art (1:4) peek on the other side of the camera. The insert list rounds out with Tension Builders (1:9).

All told, there’s one basic insert per hobby pack.

UD Fleer Retro was an awesome product. Whoever is in charge of the non-sports card products is doing an amazing job. The precious metals gems are probably in my top five favorite card designs. Hoping UD stays in business and gets back into making more sports products. Seems like they’ve really kind of faded away over the years.
