The 2020 Topps Baseball Retail Factory Set Rookie Variations aren’t rare. You don’t even have to really chase them. However, they do represent another base-style card for five first-year players.
Included in specially marked retail factory sets, these are a bonus. They do not replace the regular versions of the cards. Rather, they’re in addition to. Four of the rookies are from Series 1: Bo Bichette, Yordan Alvarez, Gavin Lux and Aristides Aquino. Luis Robert is the lone representative from 2020 Topps Series 2.
The most common 2020 Topps Baseball retail factory set comes in a blue box. However, different stores have some additional versions that come with the five variations and more. For example, Target has a purple box set that adds a Chrome Rookie Variation to the mix as well. All sets are clearly labeled as to what’s inside.
Other Hints to Look For
If you get one of the 2020 Topps Baseball retail factory sets, nabbing the variations is easy. They’re in a separate pack. But if you’re a player collector or someone digging through a collection, it might not be so simple.
Card backs have a couple of telltale signs that show you have one of the Rookie Variations. The first is the code at the end of the small print. The special factory set versions end in 863.
The reverse has another sign for variations. Look at the main card number. For the regular versions, it’ll say ‘Series 1’ or ‘Series 2.’ On the variants, it notes ‘Complete Set.’
