1980’s Flash Gordon might seem like an odd choice to spoof with Garbage Pail Kids. At the same time, the campy nostalgia of the film makes it the perfect choice. Enter 2020 Topps Garbage Pail Kids: Crash Gordon 40th Anniversary.
Similar to the recent GPK Gone Exotic sets that poked fun at Netflix’s Tiger King, the Crash Gordon set is small and available only through Topps’ website. It has a one-week sales window from August 13-20 with individual sets costing $19.99. A ten set bundle runs $179.99.
It’s another print-to-order release with the production numbers limited to the initial purchases.
The 2020 Topps GPK: Crash Gordon 40th Anniversary checklist has ten total cards. It uses five different gags, each getting the tradition A-B name variations.
There are no chase cards this time around.
Released in late 1980, Flash Gordon was something of a hit at the time. However, its campy ways have helped the space opera endure and develop a massive cult following in the decades since. Sam J. Jones stars in the titular role.
