2023 Topps Golden Mirror Image Variations Change Flagship Baseball’s SP, SSP Hunt
2023 Topps Golden Mirror Image Variations are one of the big changes in Series 1. For years, one of the most popular parts of Topps Baseball has been the SP and SSP (and, more recently, Ultra SP) variations. 2023 Topps Series 1 Baseball variations exist, but the approach is different. And it’s just getting started.
Typically, any given Topps flagship release in the last decade — Series 1, Series 2 and Update — has anywhere from 50 to 100 different variations. Within that is a tiered approach with varying degrees of Short Print Variations and Super Short Print Variations. SPs are normally somewhat common and don’t cost a lot unless it’s a superstar or big-name rookie. SSPs dry up quickly and become targets of set builders, player collectors and team collectors.
The varying levels of rarity are gone with the 2023 Topps Golden Mirror Image Variations. The chase from different types of collectors will likely remain, but everything is tough this time around even if the odds suggest that print runs aren’t scarce.
2023 Topps Golden Mirror Image Variations Primer
The heart of the Golden Mirror Image Variations remains the same. They have the same design and layout as a regular base card. However, they come with a different image. Often, these photos show more personality, on the field or off.
In the past, Topps Baseball variations have been somewhat sneaky. By design they could easily be missed. There were really only two ways to know if you pulled an SP or SSP. You could memorize (or reference) all the different images, both base and variations. When there’s 100 variations in a release, that gets daunting.
The faster way to check for variations was to look at the codes in the fine print on the back. Even with 20/20 vision, these numbers are small and not always easy to read.
2023 Topps Golden Mirror Image Variations change that. For Series 1, they’re clearly marked on the front. Both have an easy signifier on the back, too so there’s no need to crack out the magnifying glass or work out the photographic memory.
How to Spot 2023 Topps Baseball Variations
The first giveaway that a 2023 Topps Baseball card is a variation is the Topps logo on the front, at least for Series 1. Regular base cards use silver foil. Golden Mirror Image Variations have, you’ve guessed it, gold foil instead.
For whatever reason, Series 2 variations stick with the standard silver logo so they may not jump out until you flip the card over.
Backs also make spotting a 2023 Topps Golden Mirror Image Variation easy.
For starters, they’re clearly marked with “SSP” in gold foil at the top next to the card number. It’s not small font like recent Topps Heritage variations, either. The label just as big as the number.
An added touch is the gold highlights in the background as well for the player name, vitals box and surrounding border. But the label is the easiest giveaway for the 2023 Topps Baseball variations.
How Many 2023 Topps Baseball Variations Are There?
Perhaps the biggest change for the variations in Topps Baseball is the scope. Instead of around 100 total SP and SSP cards to chase, which often includes multiples for the same player or card number if legends are involved, all 2023 Topps Baseball base cards have Golden Mirror Image Variations.
Yes, every base card has a second version. That’s 330 cards in Series 1, another 330 in Series 2 and, 330 more in Update Series.
They’ve essentially become a parallel with almost 1,000 cards (990 to be exact).
How Rare Are the 2023 Topps Golden Mirror Image Variations?
If the sheer size of the 2023 Topps Golden Mirror Image Variations wasn’t enough, just finding one is tough.
Here are the odds for 2023 Topps Series 1 variations:
- Hobby – 1:454 packs
- Hobby Jumbo – 1:46 packs
- Blaster – 1:1,360 packs
- Hanger Boxes – 1:203 boxes
At the box level, you could break 15 hobby boxes and not find one of the variation. You might bust 125 blaster boxes and come up empty. Hobby jumbo are a modest 1:4.6 boxes but they’re also the most expensive 2023 Topps Series 1 Baseball configuration.
These numbers take into account landing just one card. Next comes the scope. Series 1 has 330 variations. With perfect collation and no doubles, you’d have to open about 150,000 hobby packs to finish the set (149,820 hobby packs to be exact).
As for production numbers, it takes a little guess work as the 2023 Topps Baseball variations aren’t serial numbered. But the odds for other parallels do provide some major clues. The odds for the Golden Mirror Image Variations is pretty much in the middle between Red Rainbow Foil cards that have 199 copies and Vintage Stock, which are numbered to 99. So, while not exact, it’s fair to assume there are somewhere around 150 copies of each Golden Mirror Image Variation.
Some may opt to go for the full run but the bigger audience for the 2023 Topps Golden Mirror Image Variations is likely to be the player and team collectors.

So I’m assuming these golden mirror variation SPs are completely replacing the regular SPs and SSPs that we’ve had in the past? Basically there will not be any SP’s that aren’t the Golden mirror variations?
Just what we need, more variations, said no one ever.
Are the Series 2 SSP’s called Silver mirrors?
@Bob, I was actually looking for that exact answer. I got a #506 Wil Mayer and the Topps logo on the front, and the SSP on the back look NO WHERE close to being gold.
@Bob, love autocorrect….that would be #506 Wil Myer
How do you know which one is a golden mirror, super short print or paralel card on the list.
This article explains exactly how to spot a Golden Mirror variation (they’re marked on the back). There are links in the article to the Series 1, Series 2 and Update checklists that list parallels.
I pulled from 2023 update #us144 02/99. The Topps logo on the upper right is looped. Never seen this. Any knowledge of this?
Sounds like a Vintage parallel.
I got A 2024 Xander Bogaerts IGolden Mirror Image card variation card on my set, but i can’t even find it online. Is this card worth anything at all.
