We wrapped up our BLP shows for the week last night with the incredibly knowledgeable and always fun, Matt Castello. For those of you who followed his work at MLB Pipeline you know exactly what I mean. If you’re not familiar with him from there, perhaps you know him from the podcast he hosts with Blake Jamieson, Pretty Big News. Maybe even from the popular 10:23 webcast as well. Either way, we’re excited he’s here for Beckett Live Presents: Matt Castello.

As the show started we learned a little bit about how he became a Yankees fan and his dad’s futile attempts to get him to back the Mets. We discussed his time at MLB Pipeline and how that has affected his collecting habits. Let’s just say that his eye for prospecting may be a bit better than mine.

After several questions from the audience about the Soto vs. Acuna debate, we switched gears to discuss sports art. Matt’s influence there has been felt as well as he has worked closely alongside Mr. Jamieson during Project 2020. We’ve seen him in the background on 10:23 and as an emergency fill-in temporary host as well. He has also heavily promoted the work of other artists helping to spread the news of sports art everywhere.

There was much more to this interview as well. Check out the full episode below.

Parting Shots

This was my first interview directly with Mr. Castello and I was very happy to finally make this happen. I have watched from the sidelines as he has put his best effort forward over the last year striving to help others and never taking more than he gives. To hear his enthusiasm and and passion for sports art and the hobby was refreshing.

I believe that Matt has a place in both of those worlds and will be a key figuring in their continued push into the mainstream. We all know and praise the big influencers who get the credit for making headlines. However, the truth is that they wouldn’t be where they are without the teams behind them. Matt may be a team player at the moment, but there is a lot more to him than I think we know and I look forward to watching him come into his own.
