Beckett Sports Card Hot / Cold – January 28, 2023
Welcome to another Beckett Sports Card Hot/Cold where we take a quick look and what’s hot and what’s not in the worlds of sports and sports cards.
With Super Bowl LVII, football is the big focus right now. And with the 49ers continuing to win, that means that Brock Purdy’s momentum continues. The rookie quarterback has come out of nowhere causing a unique situation. Purdy was so unheralded that he has only appeared in a handful of products so far rather than the full range of 2022 releases. One also has to factor in how few of the big potential names in the 2022 draft got a chance to do much this season, which has led to less pop than some recent years with deep rookie crops. The recent arrival of 2022 Panini Mosaic Football has given collectors a more widely available Brock Purdy Rookie Card finally and both 2022 Spectra and 2022 Illusions have autographs of the QB in full uniform. But what matters most at the moment is that Purdy’s name is on the card.
Someone to watch right now is Zach Hyman of the Edmonton Oilers. He’s having a breakout year playing on the team’s top line with Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. Not even at the All-Star Game and Hyman has already set career highs in assists (32) and points (57). His 25 goals are just two short of his career best.
Scott Rolen‘s election to the Baseball Hall of Fame renewed interest in his cards this week. A bump in prices is understandable but he’s not a top-tier name when it comes to the hobby. Think more along the lines of well liked and respected.
