Disney and Marvel Trading Cards Coming from Topps
Topps has landed trading card licenses for a trio of pop culture heavyweights: Disney, Marvel and Pixar. It’s a global deal that marks a big expansion from Topps’ existing dealings with Disney Consumer Products, including Star Wars.
“We’re thrilled to officially expand our relationship with Topps to bring storytelling from across our brands to card collecting enthusiasts around the world,” said Paul Gitter, Executive Vice President, Global Brand Commercialization, Disney Consumer Products.
Things kick off in early 2025 with the release of Topps Finest X-Men ’97, based on the Disney+ animated series.
Topps and Disney have actually had a fairly comprehensive business relationship for a long time. Star Wars has been with the card maker since 1977, pre-dating Disney’s acquisition of the franchise by decades. There’s also Topps’ digital apps for all things Disney, Star Wars, Marvel and Pixar. Those aren’t going anywhere.
There has also been a limited slate of physical Marvel and Disney trading cards in recent times, albeit aimed at Europe and the surrounding area. These include Topps Chrome sets for both franchises.
This marks a big change for the entertainment trading card landscape. Upper Deck had been doing Marvel and Disney sets in North America for a very long time. This includes sets for virtually every Marvel Cinematic Universe film and TV show. Upper Deck did recently announce that they’d landed the DC Comics rights so they’re also starting a new chapter when it comes to comic trading cards.
