Did his hot start got you thinking about what Rhys Hoskins Rookie Card to chase? If so, you’re not alone. And you don’t necessarily have to limit your choice to just one.

Rhys Hoskins Rookie Card Header

2017 was a big year for rookies and home runs. While much of the talk centered around Aaron Judge and Cody Bellinger, Rhys Hoskins was breaking some records as well.

But because of his debut with the Phillies later in the season, the first Rhys Hoskins Rookie Card in a MLB base set didn’t arrive until 2018.

From a hobby perspective, Rhys Hoskins cards were largely under the radar until his call-up to the majors. A fifth round pick of the Phillies in 2014, he wasn’t exactly in a high-profile place. And products reflected this.

Hoskins is in 2014 Bowman Draft, but only among the prospects and draft picks. His first autographs didn’t come out until a couple of years later in 2016 Elite Extra Edition from Panini. Taking that a step further, the debut Rhys Hoskins autograph card with him in a MLB uniform didn’t come until 2017 Bowman High Tek.

It’s important to remember that Hoskins is still in the very early part of his MLB career. It’s a volatile market at the moment that could continue to grow. It might also fall back to its earlier, unassuming place. That said, it might be worth going back and digging through your cards from the past couple of years to see if you have any Rhys Hoskins cards hiding away.

Rhys Hoskins Rookie Card Guide

The following Rhys Hoskins Rookie Card guide highlights cards with the ‘RC’ designation in the Beckett Baseball Card Database and Price Guide. Inserts and parallels are not included.

This is an ongoing list that will be updated in the months ahead as the number of Rhys Hoskins Rookie Cards grows. Cards are listed alphabetically.

2018 Bowman Rhys Hoskins RC #10

One of the more basic cards in the Rhys Hoskins Rookie Card portfolio, his 2018 Bowman card exists in a product driven by Chrome Prospects and autographs. While Hoskins does have a Chrome Rookie Autographs insert available, his actual RC is somewhat overlooked in the chase for more premium elements. It also appears that 2018 Bowman had a sizable production run so finding a copy won’t be hard.

It is worth noting that the Chrome Rookie Autograph is Hoskins’ first signature for the brand. He didn’t have any Bowman Chrome Autographs before 2018.

2018 Diamond Kings Rhys Hoskins RC #121

From the image to the canvas-style stock, the 2018 Diamond Kings Rhys Hoskins Rookie Card is done to create with an artistic effect. It’s one of the set’s short prints. While this adds some value, it’s still reasonable given the fact the SPs are reasonable pulls. Besides the regular parallels, there’s also a Black and White Variation (plus its own slate of parallels).

Parallels: Artist Proof Red, Blue Frame, Red Frame, Artist Proof Gold (/99), Gray Frame (/99), Brown Frame (/49), Artist Proof Blue (/25), Green Frame (/5), Artist Proof Masterpiece (1/1), Black Frame (1/1)

2018 Donruss Rhys Hoskins RC #38

2018 Donruss was the first Panini baseball product out of the gate for the season. The checklist is loaded with nostalgic nods, a big being the Rated Rookie logo that adorns this Rhys Hoskins Rookie Card. Available at both the hobby and retail levels, this is a card collectors should look at from a value perspective. Its appeal is intended to be wide. If value is of importance, there are lots of parallels to chase as well.

Parallels: Blank Back, Career Stat Line (/500), Teal Border (/199), Gold Press Proof (/99), Father’s Day Ribbon (/49), Mother’s Day Ribbon (/25), Season Stat Line (/18), Artist Proof (/10), Press Proof (/5), Game Day Stat Line (1/1), Printing Plates Black (1/1), Printing Plates Cyan (1/1), Printing Plates Magenta (1/1), Printing Plates Yellow (1/1)

2018 Finest Rhys Hoskins RC #75

Chromium stock and a busy design are what make the 2018 Finest Rhys Hoskins stand out. The line is firmly cemented among the company’s mid-range offerings. Refractors add the traditional shine and come in several colors. Hoskins’ lone autograph in 2018 Finest is a Finest Hours card.

Parallels: Refractors, Purple Refractors (/250), Blue Refractors (/150), Green Refractors (/99), Gold Refractors (/50), Orange Refractors (/25), Red Refractors (/5), Superfractors (1/1)

2018 Topps Rhys Hoskins RC #181

2018 Topps Series 1 Baseball is home to the first Rhys Hoskins Rookie Card. Over time and as more cards come out, it might not be the most valuable. But there’s also something about the tradition of the Topps flagship line. It’s a foundation for the entire hobby, something that is collected widely and in large numbers. Supply should never be a problem for the base version. For rarity, there are also lots of parallels to chase.

Parallels: Rainbow Foil, Negative Black and White, Purple, Gold (/2018), Vintage Stock (/99), Black (/67), Independence Day (/76), Father’s Day Powder Blue (/50), Mother’s Day Hot Pink (/50), Memorial Day Camo (/25), Clear (/10), Platinum (1/1), Printing Plates Black (1/1), Printing Plates Cyan (1/1), Printing Plates Magenta (1/1), Printing Plates Yellow (1/1), Transcendent Party (1/1)

2018 Topps Gypsy Queen Rhys Hoskins RC #199

The 2018 Topps Gypsy Queen Rhys Hoskins Rookie Card combines a Tobacco Era pastiche with a modern turn in the color department. One thing to watch for is with the parallels as they don’t all take the easy-to-spot color approach. Many go for something more subtle and easy to miss if you don’t know what you’re looking for. The card also has a pair of variations. The first falls under the Capless banner and has a different photo with Hoskins holding his helmet. The second is a Team Swap Error where he’s listed on the front as being a member of the Washington Nationals. Gasp!

Parallels: Bazooka Back, GQ Logo Swap, Green, Missing Blackplate, Missing Nameplate, Indigo (/250), Black and White (/50), Red (/10), Black (1/1)

2018 Topps Heritage Rhys Hoskins RC/Nick Williams RC #206

Borrowing from 1969 Topps Baseball and its multi-player Rookie Stars subset, Rhys Hoskins shares his 2018 Topps Heritage Rookie Card with fellow Phillie, Nick Williams. The retro vibe goes beyond the throwback design and carries over to the old-school-style card stock as well. While Heritage is popular, base cards don’t usually carry a ton of value.

To that end, Hoskins is part of the Action Photo Variations checklist where he rides solo. These variations have become very popular over the past couple of years. They are much more scarce but they’re not impossible to find either.

Parallels: Black Border (Print Run: 50), 100th Anniversary (/25), Magenta Back (Print Run: 10), Reverse Stock (Print Run: 5)

2018 Topps Opening Day Rhys Hoskins RC #82

At first glance the 2018 Topps Opening Day Hoskins looks an awful lot like his card from the flagship set. And you wouldn’t be wrong. When it comes to base cards, Opening Day has long been a “greatest hits” version of the main Topps set with the added logo on the front.

This is an entry level product that is widely available and among the cheapest of the year. Not surprisingly, it’s also bound to be one of the cheapest Rhys Hoskins Rookie Cards.

Rhys Hoskins Pre-Rookie Card and Prospect Card Highlights

The following is a list of early Rhys Hoskins cards that don’t fall under the traditional Rookie Card definition. It isn’t a full list but rather highlights of key cards.

2014 Bowman Chrome Draft Rhys Hoskins #CDP122

2014 Bowman Draft Baseball features the first Rhys Hoskins cards, the most popular of which is the Chrome version. Pictured in full Phillies gear, there is no shortage of copies out there. The base Prospect cards are often overlooked in the product as collectors hunt for autographs and Refractors. Hoskins does not have an autograph in 2014 Bowman Draft.

Hoskins also has a near-identical regular Bowman card in the product. The design is basically the same, only done on more traditional card stock and its own mix of parallels. The Chrome version is the more popular of the two.

To take it even further, there’s also a 2014 Bowman Chrome Mini Rhys Hoskins card that came in the form of a factory set that was sold separately. The photo is the same but it’s numbered 59 in the set. The Mini has lots of parallels as well.

In the modern state of the hobby, a lot of collectors may treat this as a Rhys Hoskins Rookie Card of sorts. However, because it’s an insert, it doesn’t fit the traditional definition.

Parallels: Refractors, Black Wave Refractors, Blue Wave Refractors, Blue Refractors (/399), Green Refractors (/150), Red Ice Refractors (/150), Purple Ice Refractors (/99), Black Refractors (/75), Gold Refractors (/50), Orange Refractors (/25), Red Wave Refractors (/25), Silver Wave Refractors (/25), Shimmer Refractors (/15), Red Refractors (/5), Printing Plates Black (1/1), Printing Plates Cyan (1/1), Printing Plates Magenta (1/1), Printing Plates Yellow (1/1), Superfractors (1/1)

2016 Elite Extra Edition Autographs Rhys Hoskins #181

2016 Elite Extra Edition was the first place to find certified Rhys Hoskins autograph cards. The main version adopts the bright design of the base set, which is heavy on foil. Parallels are numerous and feature a mix of colors and die cuts.

Parallels: Aspirations Purple (/100), Status Red Die Cut (/75), Aspirations Blue (/50), Status Emerald Die Cuts (/25), Aspirations Tie Dye (/10), Status Tie Dye Die Cuts (/5), Aspirations Gold (1/1), Printing Plates Black (1/1), Printing Plates Cyan (1/1), Printing Plates Magenta (1/1), Printing Plates Yellow (1/1), Status Gold Die Cut (1/1)

2016 Elite Extra Edition College Ticket Autographs Rhys Hoskins #15

Hoskins has a second autograph card available in packs of 2016 Elite Extra Edition, although the marks don’t show it. This one falls under Panini’s Contenders banner and its College Ticket Autographs line. The base version of the cards isn’t serial numbered but the small number of parallels are.

The one-of-one Championship Ticket version sold for $699.99 on eBay on August 24, 2017.

Parallels: Cracked Ice (/24), Playoff Ticket (/15), Championship Ticket (1/1), Printing Plates Black (1/1), Printing Plates Cyan (1/1), Printing Plates Magenta (1/1), Printing Plates Yellow (1/1)

2016 Topps Heritage Minor League Rhys Hoskins #184

The 2016 Topps Heritage Minor League Rhys Hoskins doesn’t carry a lot of value. However, it is notable for being his first card in a MiLB uniform. Based on the 1967 Topps Baseball design, there’s a retro look (and feel) to the card. It’s also available in much smaller supplies that MLB Heritage releases. That said, it’s not rare.

Parallels: Blue (/99), Peach (/25), Black (1/1)

Buy on:

2017 Bowman High Tek Autographs Rhys Hoskins #BHT-RH

The 2017 Bowman High Tek Rhys Hoskins autograph might not be Chrome, but it’s his first signed card in a MLB uniform. It’s also his only 2017 autograph in a Topps set so all other MLB signature cards are from 2018 and beyond. That gives this card some added significance. And yet, prices don’t necessarily reflect that.

2017 Bowman High Tek marks the first time Tek has been given the prospect treatment. The final checklist wasn’t huge as far as player selection goes. Combine that with lots of autographs in every box and there’s an appearance this card isn’t very scarce.

Should Hoskins continue to live up to his early play, this may become a more important Rhys Hoskins card.

Parallels: Rush Diffractors, Tidal Diffractors (/199), Green Rainbow (/99), Gold Rainbow (/50), Orange Magma Diffractors (/25), Red Orbit Diffractors (/5), Black Galactic Diffractors (1/1), Black Rainbow (1/1), Press Proofs Black (1/1), Press Proofs Cyan (1/1), Press Proofs Magenta (1/1), Press Proofs Yellow (1/1)

2017 Donruss Signature Series Rhys Hoskins #SS2-RY

You’re not going to find the 2017 Donruss Signature Series Rhys Hoskins autograph in packs of 2017 Donruss. Rather, it’s part of the late-releasing 2017 Panini Chronicles Baseball. The product combines elements from several brands, including rookie-focused expansions to different Donruss elements. That includes one of the line’s key autograph set.

Parallels: Blue (/99), Red (/49), Gold (/25), Purple (/15), Pink (/10), Green (/5), Black (1/1)

2017 Elite Extra Edition Future Threads Silhouette Autographs Rhys Hoskins #38 /99

Hoskins doesn’t have a regular prospect-themed autograph in 2017 Elite Extra Edition Baseball. However, he does have a signed memorabilia card. The Future Threads Silhouette Autographs card layers a large swatch under the main portion of the card, leaving room for the signature. With 99 copies, the base version is fairly rare. Parallels don’t add a lot to the total count, either.

Parallels: Red (/25), Purple (/10), Emerald (/5), Blue (/3), Gold (1/1)

2017 Leaf Metal Draft Rhys Hoskins Autographs #BA-RH1

Leaf managed to get Rhys Hoskins autographs into multiple products. This includes 2017 Leaf Metal Draft, an alternative of sorts for those who like their early autographs on chromium stock. All versions of the card are done with a Prismatic finish, which is essentially like a Refractor.

As usual for the brand, the design elements are kept minimal, allowing for the finish to pop. The signature is also on-card.

Parallels: Wave, Blue Prismatic (/25), Purple Prismatic (/15), Pink Prismatic (/10), Black Prismatic (/7), Green Prismatic (/5), Red Prismatic (/3), Gold Prismatic (1/1), Gold Super Prismatic (1/1), Printing Plates Black (1/1), Printing Plates Cyan (1/1), Printing Plates Magenta (1/1), Printing Plates Yellow (1/1)

2017 Leaf Valiant Rhys Hoskins Autographs #BA-RH1 /99

The 2017 Leaf Valiant Rhys Hoskins has a lot of the same elements as Metal Draft, only with color integrated more into the overall design, even the base version. But you’ve still got the key points of an on-card autograph, chromium and a rainbow to chase.

It’s also worth noting that every box of the product comes with a card that’s already been graded by BGS. That should make it easier for some to copies already slabbed and inspected.

Parallels: Blue (/35), Orange (/25), Purple (/15), Yellow (/10), Black (/5), Printing Plates Black (1/1), Printing Plates Cyan (1/1), Printing Plates Magenta (1/1), Printing Plates Yellow (1/1), Red (1/1)

2017 Panini Day Manufactured Patch Autograph Rhys Hoskins #RH /10

This card comes from a promo set. Limited to ten total copies, it’s signed on a piece of fabric-like material that also has a Panini logo patch. This isn’t a game-worn swatch. It was available in packs at the 2017 National Collectors Convention.

2017 Topps Now Rhys Hoskins

Rhys Hoskins has multiple cards in 2017 Topps Now Baseball, the ongoing online-exclusive that offers new cards almost every day. The idea is to showcase the big happenings in the league and weave together the story of the season. Each card in the main line is available for 24 hours, which dictates the print run.

The first 2017 Topps Now Rhys Hoskins card is #508 in the set and has 1,247 copies.

This is another curious instance that can open up the debate as to what’s a Rhys Hoskins Rookie Card and what isn’t. 2017 Topps Now does have cards with the RC logo. But this Hoskins’ cards and other late-season debuts get a “Call-Up” designation so as to prevent them from not getting them next year. From a collecting perspective, that’s hard to explain.

However, the Beckett database doesn’t give any Topps Now cards the RC designation because of their limited distribution. Another part of the debate would be which one to give the RC tag as they all have different print runs. The traditional Beckett definition goes with the most common in a product with stated print runs. But in a set like this, the first seems to make the most sense. All are good discussions for collectors to have and think about. Ultimately it comes down to collecting what you enjoy.

Just my thing, but I consider the RC printed on the card in Topps flagship to be their rookie card. Even if they have been in the majors a couple of years for brief stints. Again, just my view on the whole crazy situation and how I collect. I purchased one 5 pack of his 2017 Now cards Think it was his 3rd card. Great looking cards of which I plan to get a couple autographed by him. I plan on purchasing / trading for as many of his 2018 cards as possible. Like you said Ryan, whatever you enjoy collecting. Good luck everyone………..
