T206 Ty Cobb “Lucky 7” Find Turns Into an Elite 8
It turns out the “Lucky 7” find of seven rare T206 Ty Cobb Back Ty Cobb cards is actually eight.
The family that initially came across seven of the cards sitting among some postcards in a paper bag of their late great grandfather recently discovered yet another copy inside a dusty box between two books.
The card was graded PSA 2, which puts it on the lower end of the original seven. Those went from a low of one 1.5 to a high of 4.5 and sold for about $3 million combined.
The family is opting to hold onto their latest find for the time being.
“The name ‘The Lucky 7 Legacy’ was added to its PSA label so the connection to the original find was clear to the hobby, while still distinguishing it from the initial group,” said Joe Orlando, PSA President.
The first group of cards has a label with “The Lucky 7 Find.”
What makes this particular card so rare is the back. T206 cards come with 16 different backs advertising various tobacco brands and one with Cobb as, “King of the Tobacco Smoking World.” The Ty Cobb back also has a slightly glossy finish to it.
The back is exclusive to just Cobb’s Red Portrait card, one of four the Hall of Famer has in the full T206 set. It’s also the rarest in all of the T206 set.
Even with this latest find, only 24 copies of the card are known to exist. By comparison, the T206 Honus Wagner has more than 50 known copies.
