Think twice before buying these Jason Day golf cards!
By Ryan Cracknell | Hobby Editor
When Jason Day won the 2015 PGA Championship, he etched his place in history. But for those looking to add Jason Days cards to their collection, there aren’t any.
At least official ones.
Like a lot of athletes, eBay has a handful of cards of the golfer. The problem is that they’re anything but official and shouldn’t amount to any sort of value. But that didn’t stop some, likely unsuspecting, from paying decent money for them.
Don’t fall for the same trap.
The cards in question have most of the hallmarks of real cards. They share the same dimensions. They have pictures of the Australian golfer in action. The designs, while not complex, aren’t the worst things ever committed to cardboard either. The backs on some even note that they have limited print runs. And they very well might. But there’s nothing official about them.
These sorts of cards don’t amount to much more than someone like you or me going on our computer, whipping something up and printing them off. Even if they look good, they’re not considered by most to be collectible in any way. There are likely copyright and likeness issues involved, they don’t look like they have any sort of approval from Day and they’re not part of editorial content like you see with the Sports Illustrated for Kids cards.
In short, they’re like Broder cards from days gone by.
Ultimately, like anything else, making a card purchase is a choice. However, if you’re looking for something that you might want to sell or trade somewhere down the line, these aren’t the thing. If they were a dollar or two, that would be one thing. You could write them off as a novelty. It still wouldn’t make it right, but at least people wouldn’t be wasting significant amounts of money. We’re talking $40 for one card.
Just because there are no Jason Day cards right now doesn’t mean there won’t be some down the road. Golf isn’t the kind of sport that can support a regular flow of releases. But between the emergence of Day and Jordan Spieth over the last year or so, it’s probably safe to say that golf is being discussed in some form by card manufacturers.
It might be easy to get caught up in the moment but this is in instance where you’re going to want to wait.
With the emerging of golfers without cards, Day, Fowler, Spieth etc I think Upper Deck needs to do a 2015 SP Authentic/Exquisite!
Sooooooo given that you are concerned, I would assume us golf fans should be excited for 2016?
No announcements have been made regarding any official sets with Daly in them yet.
